Montsame names world events of 2010

Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, /MONTSAME/ The MONTSAME national news agency of Mongolia is highlighting the most important events that have occurred in the world in 2010.



1. On January 12, a strong earthquake measuring 7.0 magnitude hit Haiti killing 220 thousand people and leaving 1.3 million homeless. An 8.8 magnitude earthquake occurred February 27 in Chile killing 521 people and making two million homeless. Another deadly earthquake of 7.1 magnitude occurred April 14 in Qinghai, China killing 2,187, 80 people were lost.



2. The 21st Winter Olympic Games of 2010 took place February 12-28 in Vancouver, Canada. Exactly, 2,632 athletes from 82 nations participated in 15 sports events for 615 packages of medals.



3. The President of the Russian Federation D.Medvedev and the President of the United States of America Barack Obama signed April 8 a treaty on reduction of strategic offensive arms. The treaty has been approved by both the Russian parliament and the U.S parliamentary House of Representatives. It is being discussed at the U.S Senate.



4. On April 10, an airplane carrying eight crew members and 88 passengers including the President of Poland Lech Kaczynski, his spouse Maria Kaczynska and high ranking public and military figures of Poland, crashed in Smolenks oblast, Russia killing all the people on board.



5. The 19th FIFA World Cup of 2010 took place June 11-July 11 in South Africa. This is the very first FIFA World Cup to be held in Africa. The national football team of Spain gained its first World champion title.



6. The biggest rescuing operation ran October 13 in Chile. Thirty-three miners near Copiapу, Chile were trapped 700 meters underground in a mining accident in San Jose Mine, are brought back to the surface after surviving for a record 69 days.



7. Political life was very active in Asia. A clash took place November 23 between the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) and the Republic of Korea. It was one of the most serious incidents since the end of the Korean War in 1950-1953.



In addition, a protest activity and riot took place April 6-7 in Kyrgyzstan. Due to the riots, the state authority has been transferred into the opposite force. The Kyrgyz President Kurmanbek Bakiyev was forced to flee to another country. During the riots, 79 people were killed and some 1,400 were injured.



8. Secret materials regarding the U.S Department of State and the Pentagon were published November 28 in the WikiLeaks website. In conjunction with it, a founder of the website Julian Assange has been arrested.



9. The Expo 2010 ran from May 1 to October 31 in Shanghai, China, with participation of some 240 countries and international organizations. The event is held for the first time in a developing country. Attracting over 73 million, the Expo's organizer has earned USD 12 billion.



10. A dissident of China Liu Xiaobo has been awarded with the Nobel Prize for peace. He lived in prison with 12-year sentence for "destroying the stability of the state". The Chinese authorities released him from the prison. However, he has not been allowed to take part in the award ceremony.
