Edmonton student to Brazil to play in World Vision Cup
An Edmonton student will head to Brazil to play in the World Vision Cup while bringing awareness to violence against children.
Zachary Aubert, 18, has sponsored a child through World Vision since the age of 10 and is a youth ambassador for the charity.
At the May 10 to May 17 event, youth will work to develop a letter to FIFA regarding child labour, physical abuse, sexual abuse, malnutrition and lack of economic opportunities in Brazil.
"It's pretty appalling that people still use children as slaves," Aubert said. "It needs to be brought to light."
Of the 90 ambassadors across Canada, 15 youth will head down to Brazil from Canada. Youth from Somalia, Ghana, Mongolia, Bolivia, Ethiopia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Dominican Republic, Korea, Australia, Canada Germany and others will join in the World Vision Cup.
In addition to sharing in each other's culture, the youth will bring awareness to social issues in Brazil.
"In Canada we're pretty blessed, but there's countries like Ghana and Ethiopia and Ecuador that have more challenges that we do," Aubert said.
He said the more people who are aware, the more people will be able to help.
The FIFA World Cup will be held in Brazil from June 12 to July 13.
