Mongol Rally 2013 first finishers speed to UB
Ralliers speed across Europe to reach Mongolia on the annual Mongol Rally run by the Adventurists. On 26th July the first team undertaking the Mongol Rally 2013 arrived at the finish line at the Mandukhai Hotel in Ulaanbaatar. Team Nafanchez, a team of Spanish drivers, completed the drive from the Czech Republic to Ulaanbaatar in a record time of 10 days. Since then two other teams have limped across the finish line.
“In 2004 six teams of brave fools set out from London on the very first edition. A decade later 600 adventurists from 31 countries are taking on a third of the planet in a tiny car. No back up, no set route, no guarantee of reaching the finish line in Ulaanbaatar. Just 10,000 miles of adventuring mayhem.”
This year will be the 10th Mongol Rally, where daring teams drive across Europe and Central Asia to Mongolia in highly inappropriate cars. The Mongol Rally is a charity event run by the Adventurists where those who deem themselves hardy enough participate to raise money for their chosen charities. This year this official charity is Cool Earth. Teams are asked to raise a minimum of £1000 for charity, £500 of which goes to the nominated official charity. The teams own chosen charities often are charities which help Mongolia.
On 14th July the 100 plus teams left Bodiam Castle in the UK. It will take the teams anywhere between two weeks and two months to reach Ulaanbaatar. Not all the teams will complete the journey. As the teams reach Mongolia they will converge on the “finishing line” located at the Mandekhai Hotel in downtown Ulaanbaatar, bringing an influx of cars into Mongolia.
