Mongolian Charity Rally
Teams of motorists from the UK are arriving in Ulaanbaatar at the end of an epic charity rally across 17 countries.
The Mongolia Charity Rally is a 10,000-mile road trip for charity, that sees around 40 teams of drivers race from London to Mongolia’s capital.
The teams set off from London on July 7, crossing borders and battling through mountain ranges, huge deserts, and some of the most challenging terrain the world has to offer.
Oliver Furlow from Oxford and Antoine Cutayar from Evesham in the UK have been raising funds for the Go Help charity by competing in the rally under the name of Alpha Badger.
And the vehicle they completed the race in – a Suzuki Carry – will now be used to help a worthy project in UB.
“We decided to do the Mongolia Charity Rally because it offered the perfect combination of traveling, adventure, and charitable work. I honestly couldn’t find a reason not to do it,” said Antoine.
“We had planned to drive through 17 countries. However, we quickly realized with a project of this magnitude that you can’t plan too far ahead.
“We’ve had some major delays in Romania which meant we were about three days behind schedule after only a week, so we had to cut Turkmenistan and Moldova off the list to make up for the lost time.
“The Russian/Mongolian crossing was incredible because Russia was full of trees and touristy resorts. Suddenly, when we entered Mongolia, we were faced with the Mongolian steppe, deserts, and lack of roads.”
The guys’ vehicle that they were driving made it all the way to Ulaanbaatar without a single tire puncture, and has now been donated, along with sponsorship money, to Go Help for their humanitarian and educational projects in and around UB.
So far, teams competing in the challenge have raised more than 24 thousand GBP – or 56 million MNT – with more expected to flood in.
