Heavy Snow Blankets Parts of China, Mongolia

Heavy snow due to a cold snap battered Hailar City in north China's Inner Mongolia on Sunday, leading to several car accidents.

Snow began falling at around 12:00 and lasted for three hours. The temperatures fell to as low as zero degree Celsius.

Many residents chose to walk because of the severe weather.

"It is Sunday today and also the Chongyang Festival. I intended to drive, but when I saw the heavy snow, I walked out and left my car in the house," said a resident.

Local traffic was severely affected as snowstorm reduced visibility significantly and gave rise to road accidents.

"More traffic accidents happened as it's snowing today, and five took place just in the morning," said Gao Boyang, a traffic warden.

"Our control center received 15 traffic accident reports within two hours between 12:00 and 14:00, which was three times the number in normal time," said Zhao Xiaowei, staff member of the traffic control center.

The temperature will continue to drop by 10 degrees Celsius in the coming days, local meteorological authorities said.

The farmers are also advised to take precautionary measures against freezing conditions.
