Foundation laid for the new National Blood Transfusion and Research Center
The Mongolian Government and Ministry of Health have decided to establish a new, earthquake resistant building for the National Blood Transfusion and Research Center, capable of storing and supplying enough blood for the people of Mongolia, at the financing of 2.9 billion MNT.
A ceremony to mark the laying of the new center’s foundation took place on July 22. The center is expected to be operational in late 2014.
Deputy Minister of Health, J.Amarsanaa, officiated the ceremony and said, “Because of the unpredictability of nature, repeated disaster, and increasing casualties worldwide, it is vital for Mongolia to collect and store enough blood reserve under proper conditions.
A performance report of the last 10 years of the National Blood Transfusion and Research Center, showed that the number of blood donors was 10,854 in 2000 while it reached 20,854 in 2012. Though it shows an increase, further increases of the blood reserve are very much required, as cancer and physical injury have become the first and third causes of mortality in the past five years.
The government and Ministry of Health have started to focus on the blood reserve as it is directly connected to national safety. Construction of a new building earmarked for the center is the first step.
The center will be equipped with modern and advanced technologies at the estimated cost of 12.8 million USD as part of the Asian Development Bank’s ‘Health Sector Development Program-5′.”
