Australia's consulate in Atlanta closes

Australia's diplomatic mission to the US city of Atlanta is closing.

The Austrade-managed consulate-general is to close permanently at the end of August.

The move means Australia's embassy in Washington DC will now have responsibility for much of the American south including the states of Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi and the Carolinas.

Austrade says the closure is part of a comprehensive realignment in which it is shifting resources to growing and emerging markets like Mongolia and Colombia.

Three staff will be affected by the closure, including Consul-General Duncan Cole.

"Austrade will maintain its services in the US through offices in New York, Washington, San Francisco and Chicago, where the organisation believes it can deliver the most value, education promotion and investment attraction," a spokesman for Trade Minister Craig Emerson said.

Australia has one of the smallest diplomatic footprints of all developed nations, with less than 100 missions in 77 of the 193 United Nations-recognised countries.
