National Security Council discusses Gobi region water issues
The National Security Council (NSC) discussed water issues affecting the Gobi region on Thursday.
Some 20 specialists and researchers took part in the meeting and expressed their opinions on the region’s water problems.
Local residents raised concerns about their water supplies during President Ts.Elbegdorj’s tour of Umnugobi aimag in January. That is why the President decided that the Gobi region’s water shortage should be discussed by the national security team.
The only nearby source of water for the Tavantolgoi deposit mine is Balgasiin Ulaan Nuur (Red Lake), which is a deep-water lake. According to preliminary studies, the lake’s reserve is 465 liters per second or 40,176 cubic meters per day. But Shandiin Bulag LLC did additional research from 2007 to 2008 and estimated the reserve to be much lower, about 150 liters per second.
Therefore, Water Office has issued a call for bids to conduct a comprehensive study of the lake. Sources believe that Balgasiin Ulaan Nuur will be used for Tavantolgoi, but that other water sources should be located.
President Ts.Elbegdorj asked the NSC officials to find other water sources, prepare technical and economic plans for the Orkhon-Gobi and Kherlen-Gobi projects, and determine the feasibility of the projects.
