Students demand more libraries

Last Thursday, over two hundred students from universities and colleges in Mongolia held a peaceful demonstration at Central Square to express their desire for more libraries. The students read books for half an hour, sitting on pieces of paper on the square.

The aim of the event was to draw people’s attention to the fact that there are insufficient numbers of library facilities in Mongolia for students. This event was organized by the “Nomtoi Nuhurluy” (Let’s Make Books Our Friends) club. The organizers of the event said that the number of libraries in Ulaanbaatar is much lower than the number of pubs and night clubs that serve alcoholic beverages.

One of the participants of the demonstration stated, “The National Library of Mongolia and the Ulaanbaatar City Library were both closed for renovation last month. There aren’t enough seats for students in schools and not every book that students need are available in the libraries.”

S.Odontuya, who studies at the School of Foreign Languages and Culture of the National University of Mongolia said, “Our school library isn’t big enough and the availability of the books is very poor.” She also said that the knowledge of students has become quite inadequate. “I want to study in a comfortable and warm library to improve my education. We need more libraries in the suburban areas of the city too.”
