Denver Botanical Garden to be built in Mongolia

The “Greening of the City” summit was held in Ulaanbaatar on September 11. Ulaanbaatar’s Environment and Green Development Mayor and other committees met with three representatives from the Denver Botanical Garden in the U.S., and signed a one year cooperation agreement.

During the meeting, Mongolian garden specialists gave a brief presentation on the current level of green developments in Mongolia. They discussed what would be required to bring about advancement. Denver Botanical Garden representatives assisted in developing a plan to establish a botanical garden and associated research, education and interpretation programs.

After the meeting, the delegations visited the Mongolian National Garden Park located on 1,280 hectares of land along the Tuul River in the Bayanzurkh District. The park was developed with the overall goal of improving the health and safety of the citizens of Ulaanbaatar, mitigating air pollution in the city and increasing green facilities.

As part of the summit, Denver Botanical Garden specialists offered a one-day workshop to local authorities, university students and faculty, and other interested parties on the development of a landscape master plan to guide the horticultural growth of Ulaanbaatar, development of a local botanical garden, native landscape restoration, and the development of an urban agriculture program.
