Close friends complete Mongolia adventure
A COURAGEOUS man from Evesham has said delivering a fast-response vehicle to one of the world's poorest countries was one of the greatest things he has done in his life.
Oliver Furlow made the life-changing 10,000 mile journey across 17 countries with close friend Antoine Cutayar as they took part in the Mongolia Charity Rally to help raise funds for the Go Help charity.
The pair, who travelled as team Alpha Badger with the vehicle, set off from London in front of their friends and family at the start of July and once across The Channel they passed through Europe's numerous landscapes and cultures before arriving at Mongolia's capital city Ulan Bator at the beginning of August.
The vehicle will now be used as part of Mongolia's ambulance service.
Speaking to the Observer just days after returning to the UK, Oliver said he was thrilled to take part in such a rewarding experience.
"Me and Antoine at the moment feel very proud over what we've achieved," he said. "We're really happy with the way it all went and I'd certainly recommend other people to do it as it is a great experience.
"We had to change the route a bit along the way but besides that things went pretty much as we planned.
"We found that Russian was the foundation for other languages but most communicating we did was done by sign language or passing around the phrase book. We found our way through everything.
"It was amazing to experience the culture in Mongolia and the welcome we received was brilliant. I found it incredible how the people there showed us everything about their life and culture.
"It feels slightly weird in a way because we had been planning and building for the trip and once we got to Ulan Bator it was like 'what do we do now' so we feel a bit empty now, so to speak.
"Coming back home to see my wife and family was an amazing feeling and one I'll won't forget. Doing this adventure is certainly up there in terms of one the best things I've done."
