Centre established to protect Mongolia’s natural resources

A ceremony was held on October 10 to open the “Centre on Conservation of Freshwater Reserves and Nature of Mongolia” (CCFRNM). The centre, located near Zaisan Hill, is funded by a JPY 756 million (13.3 billion MNT) grant-in-aid from the Government of Japan. Present at the opening ceremony were the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Japan to Mongolia, Takenori Shimizu; the Chief Representative of the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) Mongolia Office, Toshinori Isogai; and the Minister of Nature, Environment and Green Development (MNEGD), S. Oyun.

In her speech at the ceremony, Oyun stated that “The conservation of nature and green development have become some of the most important issues in the world. Information and training courses, international projects, domestic and international meetings and consultations oriented towards green development will be organized at this centre in the future. The CCFRNM will operate towards implementing resolutions and policies on green development made by the Government of Mongolia, while providing ecological knowledge to the public, especially the youth, and promoting the operations to save nature. The government has decided to operate the centre as a State Owned Organization, as it will conduct non-profit activities.”

The Ambassador, Takenori Shimizu, remarked that “Mongolia is blessed with vast lands and with diverse biologic distinctions and wildlife. But in recent years, much of the pasture lands have become infertile and the areas surrounding mining sites have been damaged to an alarming extent. Thus, it is vital for Mongolians to conduct nature conservation at an advanced level. I hope the centre will deliver valuable information and knowledge for nature sector officials and provide efficient actions to save the pristine nature of Mongolia. I’m glad that the centre has been founded this year, as this year our countries are marking the 40th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Mongolia and Japan.”
