Re-Imagining Mongolian Tradition with laughter

Mongolian comedy has been developing since the early 1990s. Comedy is of course, a distinct art form where comedians perform live on the stage and make people laugh. 

Comedy performances usually include tackling social issues in a humorous and sarcastic way. There are several comedy groups and bands in Mongolia. The most famous ones are Mask Production, X Tuts band and Shine Ue (New generation).

I had the opportunity to enjoy Mask production’s (2012) comedy performance at the Great Hall of Mongolia’s Labor Union’s Cultural Palace.The Mask Production was established in 2006 and could become one of the most famous and favorite comedy bands in Mongolia. Mask production is a group composed of the best and most talented Mongolian comedians. They performed their show “Busy Mongols for Tomorrow” in July, 2012. During the show, 35000 spectators laughed their hearts out and cheered with joy.

The leading comedians who make up Mask Production are: P.Erdenezaan,E.Byambasuren, J.Munkhsaikhan, M.Bayarmagnai,B.Enkhsaikhan, Ts.Ganzorig, A.Gereltsetseg,M.Purevdorj and Sh.Javkhlan. These performers wanted to include Mongolian tradition, folk music and dance in their routine. 

Their main goal was to introduce younger generations to the heritage of Mongolian tradition and make them laugh at the same time.The most amusing scene in their last performance concerned a young man who lived in the city. He tried to become accustomed to living in a small village. The spectators were really excited by the Mongolian national costumes which were used in this comedy show.

Mask Production has brought together tradition and modern comedy into the Mongolian Theater. The artists of Mask Production are great dancers and singers and have made two movies. They have great potential and are aiming to perform a musical.
