Anson falls quickly to Mongolian
LONDON -- Palauan judoka Jennifer Anson's Olympic experience ended in a flash yesterday here at the 2012 London Olympics.
The 35-year-old competitor, who works for Palau's Ministry of Defense with the police, lost to Mongolian Munkhzaya Tsedevsuren by ippon, the highest score possible in judo. It was over in 47 seconds.
"When I was out there, everything blacked out in my head. I wanted to be defensive, but I wanted to be offensive at the same time. But I was down on the mat and tried to defend myself," she said. "That was the best I could do. I feel like I am behind everybody else. I am a judoka only part-time, but I came along in a short period of time, that is a great thing for me."
Anson will return home intent on being an inspiration in the sport.
"My judo club has only 10 members. We started a kids' program, so we have 40 kids. I want to go back home and develop our judo program," she said. "We may be very small and not a lot of people have heard of Palau, but we can be represented in the Olympic arena. That gives hope to other Palauans. One day they can also become Olympians."
Keesha Keane is Palau's next athlete up here in London. She is a 50-meter freestyle swimmer, scheduled to compete at about 7 p.m. Friday Guam time. She is one of about 80 swimmers, and she qualified at 28.91 seconds.
