Help zoo to name mongolian foal
NAMES for Werribee Open Range Zoo’s endangered Mongolian foal have started flooding in.
The zoo and the Leader wants your help in naming the Prezwalski Horse foal born on Mother’s Day to mother Mahan and father Kolya.
He is one of only about 1700 horses left of the critically endangered breed, which at one point was extinct in the wild, and has been brought back through a global captive-breeding program, such as the one at the Werribee Zoo.
Zoo spokeswoman Kym Carter said the foal’s name should reflect his background and wild spirit.
Suggestions so far include Monchin - an abbreviation of Mongolia and China - Takhi, the Mongolian word for spirit, and Mahkol, a combination of his two parents’ names.
The winner will receive a family zoo pass which would include a wild encounter open vehicle adventure.
Email your suggestions along with the subject, “Name that horse”, your name and contact number by Tuesday, June 19.
