Mongolia seeks to expand military cooperation with Germany
ULAN BATOR, Nov. 3 (Xinhua) -- Mongolian Prime Minister Batbold Sukhbaatar discussed closer military ties with German Defense Minister Karl-Theodor zu Guttenberg here Wednesday, officials said.
"Cooperation between our two countries, including the defense sector, is developing rapidly. Germany is Mongolia's major partner in Europe and it has supported and helped Mongolia since its transition to democracy and a market economy," Batbold said.
Mongolia and Germany currently cooperate in the areas of military reform, military hospitals and training.
Guttenberg also met with Mongolian President Elbegdorj Tsakhia. "Our two countries have a special relationship. German development agencies played an important role in Mongolia's difficult period during transition from a centrally planned economy to democracy and a market economy," Tsakhia said.
Guttenberg arrived here Tuesday from Beijing after visiting China. He was invited by Mongolian Defense Minister Bold Luvsanvandan.
Guttenberg's visit is expected to focus on security and defense-political issues. The German defense minister is to meet with soldiers of the first Mongolian mission contingent, which had been deployed to the German defense area in Afghanistan.
Mongolia has sent three contingents of troops to Afghanistan since December. Each contingent consisted of 40 soldiers. Mongolian soldiers act as security guards at German camps in Afghanistan.
