“Discover Mongolia” discovers Mongolia
The 8th International Mining Investors Forum- Discover Mongolia 2010 was opened with a message from President Ts.Elbegdorj on September 8. It featured keynote speeches by Bernard Guarnera, President of Behre Dolbear, a globally recognized mineral industry advisory firm, who said Mongolia ranks 7th in the list of safest countries to invest in after Australia, Canada, Chile, US, Mexico and Brazil, and by Tim Goldsmith, Partner and Global Mining Leader of PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC).
Apart from speeches and panel discussions, there was an exhibition of activities of companies, and two interactive sessions, Parliament Hour and Government Hour where participants could ask questions to MPs and Government leaders directly. Some 700 delegates from 12 countries were present.
Guarnera expressed concern about corruption in Mongolia. Investors’ perception about legal instability in Mongolia could take time to change as no\body wanted a repeat of how the windfall profit tax was imposed, he said. Now 1,400 licenses could be cancelled by the law on prohibition of mining activity on the source of river and forest vicinity.
MPs S.Oyun, O.Chuluunbat, E.Bat-Uul, Ch.Saikhanbileg, Ch.Khurelbaatar, J.Enkhbayar, Kh.Badamsuren, Kh.Narankhuu and Ts.Davaasuren were present at Parliament Hour. The Government Hour featured representatives of the Ministry of Mineral Resources and Energy, the Mineral Board and The State Property Committee.
