Moritz Mueller-Crepon: Mid-Season Report
A total of 41 drivers, representing 17 countries, have taken part in four of the eight race weekends that make up the German ADAC Formula 4 championship, which includes four from Switzerland. One of them is Moritz Mueller-Crepon, a young talent from Lucerne. As it’s now the halfway point of the 2016 season, it’s time for the Van Amersfoort driver to reflect and also look ahead.
“Looking back, I have to admit that I didn't achieve most of the goals I had for the first half of the season, even though I started with an impressive fifth place at the opening race at Oschersleben. At the moment, it’s been a rather difficult time for us“, explained Moritz Mueller-Crepon. He experienced bad weekends, having five non-finishes out of the twelve races so far. “Highs and lows are a part of motorsport, and unfortunately a part of my season, despite this being my second year as a Formula 4 race driver,” said the 19-year-old.
His lowest point was the race weekend at Lausitzring: “It was when I was taken out the race twice. It was a shame, as the weekend was good up to that point. On top of that, I made a mistake in the first race, when I had a jump start. Another low point was the missed opportunity of points at Oschersleben, finishing 11th in the second race, but it is all part of the learning curve.”
Mueller-Crepon motivated for the second half of the season
He also pointed out that these challenging weekends are character-building. “For myself as a driver, I am learning something new every weekend. On a positive note, the team also helps me to improve as a driver. We did a very thorough analysis of all situations, so now I know where I can get better. I am motivating myself by stepping up, continuous hard work and looking as well as planning forward“, summarised Mueller-Crepon, who thinks that a positive attitude is particularly important to be able to bounce back.
“The key for a successful weekend is a good qualifying,” added the Swiss. “Putting a good lap together is very important as the lap times are very close and any mistake can really hurt. I like that though because this means that, as a driver, I can make a difference.
In my opinion the most exciting tracks are Spa, Mugello and Zandvoort. They are challenging because of high speed and from the technical point of view. They are ‘real’ driver tracks.“
For the upcoming race weekend at Austria’s Red Bull Ring, Mueller-Crepon expects to be back in the Top 10. “My aim is to get back in a rhythm to score points and the test was positive, so I am feeling confident for the weekend.“
