Quality club racing at Donington Park this weekend

Sports and saloons set for Donington battles this weekend

A multitude of sports cars and saloons will race at Donington Park this weekend (23-24 April), courtesy of MotorSport Vision Racing (MSVR) with a total of 22 races scheduled across the two days.

The circuit may have just hosted the latest round of the British Touring Car Championship, but the BTCC theme continues this weekend with plenty of saloon and sports car action.

Potential BTCC stars of the future will go wheel to wheel in the MINI Challenge, with a total of six races for its various different classes. There is a distinct touring car theme here with current BTCC ace Jeff Smith confirmed to be on the grid this weekend, while ex-BTCC racer Harry Vaulkhard is also in action, while other famous names include James Turkington (younger brother of double BTCC champion Colin Turkington) and Henry Neal, the son of triple BTCC champion Matt Neal. With the end of year champion securing a funded BTCC test drive courtesy of Dunlop, the stakes are high!

Further saloon car racing will come from the Maximumgroup.net VAG Trophy, which boasts big grids full of machinery from the Volkswagen Audi group, so expect to see plenty of cars from these manufacturers, as well as Skoda and Seat, with more action coming from the packed entry lists of the Toyo Tires Racing Saloons series, and the Production BMW Championship.

Evocative supercars will go head to head in the GT Cup Championship. GT Cup has become a key proving ground for aspiring sports car racers, with cars very similar to those seen in the British GT Championship. Expect to see cars from the likes of Lamborghini, Ferrari, Aston Martin, Porsche and more. A massive grid of these immensely valuable cars will compete in three races across the weekend, including Melton Mowbray’s Craig Dolby, at the wheel of a Lamborghini Gallardo.

Further sports car action will come from the Lotus Elise Trophy and Lotus Cup. Both these series attract huge grids of these iconic lightweight machines, with close racing guaranteed.

Completing the line-up is rapid single seater action from the F3 Cup Championship. This series caters for modern F3 machinery built between 1981 and 2011, as driven in period by drivers such as Daniel Ricciardo, Sebastian Vettel and Lewis Hamilton.

Action starts at 9.05am on both days with nine races on Saturday and 13 on Sunday. Tickets will be available for purchase upon arrival at the circuit for £17 per day or £30 for a full weekend ticket. For more information, visit www.donington-park.co.uk.
