More BTCC stars confirmed for Donington Historic Festival

Several current and former stars of the British Touring Car Championship will be in action at the Donington Historic Festival at Donington Park this weekend (30 April - 2 May).

 

Stars to have confirmed their places on the various grids include triple BTCC champion Matt Neal, double champions Colin Turkington and John Cleland and 2013 champion Andrew Jordan. Jordan’s father Mike Jordan will also be in action, as well as Steve Soper, once voted the greatest saloon car driver of all time by Motorsport Magazine, with Patrick Watts, a stalwart of the BTCC in the 1990s, the busiest of the bunch with five races.

 

Touring car legend Soper will be at the wheel of Ford Capri in the Historic Touring Car Challenge for pre-91 Touring Cars where Neal will be one of his rivals, a Ford Lotus Cortina in the U2TC Pre-66 Touring Cars, and a similar machine in the HRDC BTCC Celebration 1958-1966 race.

 

Cleland will enter four races, the U2TC Pre-66 Touring Cars event with a BMW 1800, the HSCC Super Touring Car double header in the Vauxhall Vectra he raced in period, and the HRDC Touring Greats for Pre-60 Touring Cars at the wheel of an Austin A30 Academy, where he will encounter stiff opposition in the form of the Jordan father/son combination and Patrick Watts at the wheel of a Volvo Amazon.

 

Watts will also compete in the Historic Touring Car Challenge for pre-91 Touring Cars in an MG Metro Turbo, the RAC Woodcote Trophy in a Cooper Bristol T25 and the two races for the HSCC Super Touring Trophy in a Peugeot 406 (the same car he raced in the BTCC in period). Turkington will go for glory in the HSCC Super Touring Car Trophy.

 

It’s not just touring cars in action during the festival though, with historic single seaters and sports cars also set to thrill the expected thousands of spectators across the bank holiday weekend, with a total of 17 races scheduled, featuring cars from as far back as the 1920s. There will be action on and off the track, with drift taxi experiences available on the Melbourne loop section courtesy of Caterham BookaTrack, rally demonstrations and Formula One cars on track during the lunch break. Several priceless historic racers will also venture into Castle Donington village on Saturday evening for the annual parade through the streets, which is free of charge to attend.
