Eun Gyong hopes the Yokotas visit North Korea
The Yomiuri Shimbun The parents of Megumi Yokota, abducted by North Korea, were asked to visit Pyongyang by Megumi’s daughter, Kim Eun Gyong, during a recent meeting in Mongolia, it has been learned.
The request was revealed by Shigeru and Sakie Yokota at a general meeting of a nonpartisan group of lawmakers, called the Parliamentary League for Early Repatriation of Japanese Citizens Kidnapped by North Korea, in the Diet Building Wednesday.
The couple met their granddaughter in Mongolia in mid-March.
North Korea had said the couple’s daughter was dead and handed over to Japan what it claimed to be her ashes, but it was later found that the ashes were not hers.
During Wednesday’s meeting, Sakie said her granddaughter commented on the ashes during the couple’s stay in Mongolia, saying, “Bad people in Japan have made up the whole story.”
“I wanted to ask Eun Gyong whether her mother was fine, but I stopped short of questioning her further,” Sakie told the parliamentary group.
The Yokotas also participated in a meeting at the Liberal Democratic Party’s Headquarters for the Abduction Issue, and revealed that their granddaughter asked them to visit North Korea this May for her child’s first birthday. Shigeru said, “Though it would be difficult to visit North Korea soon, I think it may be possible to visit and invite Eun Gyong to Japan some day in the future.”
