OSCE REPORT ON 2013 MONGOLIA PRESIDENTIAL ELECTIONS REVIEWED
Ulaanbaatar /MONTSAME/ Permanent Representative of Mongolia to the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), Ambassador G.Batjargal addressed the 967th meeting of the OSCE Permanent Council in Vienna October 17.
He spoke on a report issued by OSCE Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights that observed Mongolia’s presidential elections on June 26 of 2013. Responding to him, the United Nations (UN) representatives of USA and Switzerland delivered speeches.
USA Permanent Representative Daniel Baer noted that the election was conducted in a peaceful and fair manner without any complications, with high voter participation, and regarded the elections as a demonstration of Mongolia’s continued commitment to the further development of the principles of democracy and free and fair elections.
Mr Baer, furthermore, expressed a confidence that Mongolia will implement all of recommendations highlighted on the elections report such as media and freedom of expression; election administration; and maintaining the secrecy of the ballot, in order to fully meet its OSCE commitments.
He also noted that UN will encourage The Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (ODIHR) to assist Mongolia in this effort where appropriate, and thanked the Government of Mongolia for its close cooperation with the Election Observation Mission.
He reaffirmed the United States’ strong support for Mongolia’s request for a Field Presence in Mongolia. "We believe that this request should be given due consideration in the near term and– as has been our past practice–the OSCE participating States should not deny such a request from a participating State," Mr. Baer added.
Representing the Likeminded Group comprising Norway, Canada, Iceland, Principality of Liechtenstein, Switzerland, the UN representative Thomas Greminger congratulated Mongolia on the successful organization of the presidential elections that shows its great aspiration to fulfill its commitment to OSCE as its young member state.
The final report of the OSCE/ODIHR Election Observation Mission makes clear that the election was transparent and fair, he noted.
