CASSONA receives the support by the Ministry of Environment and Green Development of Mongolia, which provides an Environmental Professional Committee for the Tavan Tolgoi Power Plant Project Frankfurt (14 October 2013) - CASSONA SE (COE) cares for the sustainability of the coal-fired power plant project Tavan Tolgoi in Mongolia. Regarding the environmental compatibility of coal-fired power plants, today there are by far better pre-conditions than what was common just a few years ago. Thanks to the use of state-of-the-art filter technology, the negative impact on the environment can be reduced to a minimum. Therefor CASSONA has received the approval by the Ministry of Environment of Mongolia to give extended support to the Tavan Tolgoi Power Plant Project and to provide an Environmental Professional Committee. The Ministry of Environment and Green Development expects a detailed Environmental Impact Study, which shall be conducted during the ongoing project development process. Since 2012, the Ministry of Environment is headed by the prominent and internationally highly respected Minister Dr Sanjaasuren Oyun, who studied in Prague and earned a PhD from the University of Cambridge. 'Concerning the financing of large-scale projects, it is a matter of course that aspects of sustainability always enjoy top priority', says Oliver Walangitang, the Executive Director of CASSONA SE. 'We are very grateful to the Mongolian government that there are not only the economical interests but as well the comprehensive responsibility for the nature. For our part, we attribute great importance to the use of approved cutting edge technology to establish the construction of one of the most modern and sustainable power plants, which can satisfy the highest demands.' Coal continues to be the most important fossil energy source and has by far the largest global total resources. With a share of 30.3% of global primary energy consumption, coal was the second most important fuel in 2011 behind crude oil. Coal was the most important fuel for power generation in 2010 accounting for about 40% of the global power generation (Deutsche Rohstoffagentur, Energy Study 2012). Mongolia is one of the ten richest nations in the world in terms of raw materials. Its coal reserves are estimated to a volume of about 160 billion tons. The Tavan Tolgoi coal deposits have estimated reserves of 6 billion tons, 65% of which is believed to be high-grade coking coal (Verein der Kohleimporteure, Annual Report 2012). 'We are understanding the ambitions of the Government of Mongolia very well. Instead of exporting the own coal reserves by truck to China and in exchange importing electrical power from China, it totally makes sense - also from the ecological point of view - to transform the coal into then clean energy in the own country', states Oliver Walangitang. China is known as globally the second largest electricity producer, generating about 70% of the electrical power from coal.
