Mongolian environmentalists arrested in protest

ULAN BATOR, Sept. 16 (Xinhua) -- A leading environmental activist and a deputy of his were arrested in a protest against legal changes that they fear might loosen control on mining, said the authorities on Monday.

Environmental group Fire Nation organized a demonstration outside the parliament building to protest the revision of a law that bans mining along the river and forest areas.

Tsetsgee Munkhbayar, head of the Fire Nation group, and a deputy of his were arrested as they were trying to enter the parliament building where the Great Hural was to meet for a special session, said Col. A. Bat-Erdene, head of the investigative department of the Mongolian General Intelligence Agency.

Several laws, including the one that bans mining along river and forest basins, are expected to be revised during the session.

Police and intelligence agents also confiscated three guns, including an AK-47 rifle, nine hand grenades and explosives, he said.

Munkhbayar is a well-known environmental activist and a former herder who won the prestigious international environmental award "Goldman Prize" in 2007.
