Dalan Davkhar cemetery to become a park in 3 years

Ulaanbaatar City Administration, Gandantegchilen Monastery, the Mongolian Academy of Sciences, Ulaanbaatar Buyan company, as well as civil representatives met on August 8 to discuss a proposed park to replace the Dalan Davkhar Cemetery. During the meeting, the Ulaanbaatar City Authority for Economic Development introduced its plans to make the transformation.

The cemetery covers 137 hectares of land and there are over 250,000 graves in it, but 150,000 have been damaged, plundered, or are unnamed. In accordance with the Ordinance on Cremating and Transferring Bodies in Graves, approved by the UB Citizen’s Representative Council in 2011, over 200 graves were exhumed and remains were cremated by family request.

As part of the project, the remaining graves in Dalan Davkhar Cemetery will be processed and the land will be cleared for the establishment of a park. The project will start in 2014 and will be completed in three years.

Delegates from the companies organizing the park project believe that the establishment of a park will benefit city residents, the environment and the city’s image. Some citizens feel it is right to redevelop the cemetery and repurpose the land, while others believe that digging up graves is not a good thing.
