Yudhoyono to Depart for Mongolia, APEC Summit in Russia

President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono is set to visit the Mongolian capital of Ulaanbataar and the Russian city of Vladivostok during a seven-day tour due to kick off on Thursday.

He will engage in a bilateral meeting with his Mongolian counterpart, Tsakhia Elbegdorj, as well as take part in other meetings with Mongolian Prime Minister Norovyn Altankhuyag and parliament chairperson Zandaakhuu Enkhbold.

Yudhoyono is also scheduled to attend a forum for the Indonesian and Mongolian business delegations.

“President Yudhoyono’s state visit to Mongolia is aimed at enhancing bilateral ties between Indonesia and Mongolia, as well as to search for new economic opportunities in regard to Mongolia’s strategic position in Central Asia,” Indonesian presidential spokesman, Teuku Faizasyah, said in a press statement on Tuesday.

“Mongolia’s richness in natural resources means that a bilateral partnership would be beneficial for Indonesia’s energy sector,” he added.

Yudhoyono, who will be accompanied by First Lady Ani Yudhoyono and a number of cabinet ministers, will leave for Vladivostok on September 7 to attend the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit after his Mongolian visit.

“The Indonesian president’s presence is necessary considering the APEC leadership will be transferred from Russia to Indonesia in 2013,” Faizasyah said. It was reported earlier that Indonesia’s Bali island will host the 2013 APEC Summit.

Faizasyah added that Yudhoyono is scheduled to engage in bilateral meetings with his Russian, Chinese, Mexican, Peruvian and Chilean counterparts. He will also attend a meeting with Russian businesses on the sidelines of the APEC Summit in Vladivostok.

The Indonesian presidential entourage is expected to arrive back in Jakarta on September 10.
