SBY set to raise his international profile
In another episode of his busy diplomatic agenda in 2012, President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono is set to meet world leaders of eminent countries on the sidelines of the 2012 APEC Summit in Vladivostok, Russia.
The Garuda Indonesia Airbus A330 carrying the President, First Lady Ani Yudhoyono, and some Cabinet members took off Halim Perdanakusuma Airport in East Jakarta on Wednesday morning.
The President will make a stopover in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, before proceeding to Russia.
In the capital of the resource-rich nation, Yudhoyono will have a meeting with Mongolian President Tsakhia Elbegdorj and talks with Prime Minister Norovyn Altankhuyag and parliament leader Zandaakhuu Enkhbold on Thursday, according to presidential foreign affairs spokesman Teuku Faizasyah.
“My visit to Mongolia is upon the invitation of the Mongolian president and aimed at enhancing our bilateral trade and investment ties,” Yudhoyono said at a short press conference held in the airport before departure.
The President added that he would also have a number of meetings with fellow heads of state on the sidelines of the APEC meeting.
Among those who are scheduled to meet with Yudhoyono are Russian President Vladimir Putin, Chinese President Hu Jintao, Mexican President Felipe Calderon, Peruvian President Ollanta Humala, and Chilean President Sebastian Pinera.
“The meetings with three Latin American heads of state will be important in broadening our relationships in the region as a followup to my last visit in Brazil,” Yudhoyono said.
Yudhoyono’s last meeting with Putin was during the G20 Summit in Mexico in June, alongside other talks with other state leaders.
In Vladivostok, Yudhoyono and Putin are likely to discuss developments following their latest talks in Mexico, which include concerns over the worsening civil war in Syria.
About a week after returning from Russia, Yudhoyono will fly to New York for the first meeting of the UN High-Panel on Post 2015 MDGs.
UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has appointed Yudhoyono, UK Prime Minister David Cameron and Liberian President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, to co-chair the panel.
