SBY arrives in Mongolia

After flying for more than eight hours from Jakarta, Garuda Indonesia’s Airbus A330 carrying President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, First Lady Ani Yudhoyono and several Cabinet members touched down at the Chinggis Khaan International Airport in Ulan Bator, Mongolia on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. local time.

A press release made available to The Jakarta Post said the President and delegates were welcomed by Mongolian Foreign Minister Luvsanvandan Bold and Indonesian Ambassador to China and Mongolia Imron Cotan.

The Indonesian officials were also treated to a traditional welcoming ceremony by young Mongolians wearing traditional outfits. One of them handed a flower bouquet to Yudhoyono and his wife.

“During the ceremony, which is called Hadag, state guests are given a dairy product, a kind of Mongolian cheese, in a silver bowl,” the release said.

During their two-day visit to the mineral-rich country, the Indonesian delegation will stay at the Chinggis Khaan Hotel.

On Thursday, Yudhoyono is due to have a bilateral meeting with Mongolian President Tsakhia Elbegdorj. He will also meet with Prime Minister Norovyn Altankhuyag and Parliament Leader Zandaakhuu Enkhbold.

Yudhoyono will also make a speech at the State House in Sukhbaatar Square, Ulan Bator, the release said.

“Yudhoyono will conclude his visit to the country by attending a business forum, which will be attended by dozens of Indonesian and Mongolian businesspeople,” the release added.

Presidential spokesman for foreign affairs, Teuku Faizasyah, said the Mongolian visit was aimed at enhancing bilateral trade and investment.

The President left Halim Perdanakusuma Airport in East Jakarta on Wednesday at 8 a.m.

Yudhoyono and delegates will leave Ulan Bator on Friday and head for Vladivostok in Russia, to attend the Asia-Pacific Cooperation (APEC) Summit.

Yudhoyono is the third Indonesian President to visit Mongolia, following similar trips by Indonesia's first president, Sukarno, in 1956, and Megawati Soekarnoputri in 2003. (lfr)
