Mongolia Jails Former President
A court in Mongolia sentenced former President Enkhbayar Nambar to four years in prison on corruption charges.
The sentence, which was handed down Thursday after a three-day trial in the capital Ulan Bator, relates to allegations by the goverment’s anti-corruption agency that Enkhbayar illegally enriched himself while serving as president, along with other top offices.
The Wall Street Journal reported on the sentencing, and there’s more here, here and here.
Enkhbayar, who was arrested in April, maintained his innocence of the charges, which he said were trumped up by rival politicians to derail his political comeback.
According to the Journal report, which cited family members, Enkhbayar will remain in prison pending appeal. The family members valued cash and property he was ordered to forfeit at around $1 million.
The case disqualified him from June’s parliamentary election, which he was hoping to use as a way to return to Mongolian politics after losing a 2009 presidential election. He had formed a new political party, and enough of his allies won votes in the election that, despite the case, they were invited to join a coalition with the Democratic Party, which won a plurality of votes.
