Kim, Zolnir win judo gold
London, England – Kim Jae-Bum of South Korea took gold in the men's 81-kilogram judo event Tuesday and Slovenia's Urska Zolnir won the women's 63kg competition.
Kim lost to Germany's Ole Bischof in the gold medal match four years ago in Beijing, but avenged that setback here. In addition to taking silver at the 2008 Olympics, Kim had also won the last two world championships.
Travis Stevens of the United States missed out on a medal in the 81kg, losing his bronze medal match against Canada's Antoine Valois-Fortier. The win gave Canada its first judo medal since Nicolas Gill won silver in the 100kg at the 2000 Sydney Games.
"This is such a good feeling," said Valois-Fortier. "I can't realize it yet, but I'm so happy. I've worked so hard."
Russia's Ivan Nifontov defeated Takahiro Nakai of Japan to join Valois-Fortier as the other bronze medalist.
Zolnir, who won a bronze in this event in Beijing, earned gold this time with a win over China's Xu Lili. Xu earned her first Olympic medal.
Gevrise Emane picked up a bronze for France with a victory against Joung Da- Woon of South Korea. Japan's Yoshie Ueno also earned bronze by ousting Munkhzaya Tsedevsuren of Mongolia.
