Jennifer Nichols falls in 2nd round of archery competition, Alison Williamson loses in 1st

LONDON - Three-time Olympian Jennifer Nichols needed a shootout to reach the round of 16 in the women's individual archery competition Tuesday at Lord's Cricket Ground.

Unfortunately, the shootout wasn't the only late-turning match of the day for the 28-year-old who trains in Tucson.

Her London Olympics ended the same way they did in Beijing, with a loss in the second round, this time to Bishindee Urantungalag of Mongolia, 6-4.

Nichols gave back a two-set lead in the round of 16, shooting a 25 to her opponent's 28 in the deciding set.

"It's very difficult," Nichols said. "Because just as your confidence is rising and you're feeling like, 'OK, I've got my shots down, I've figured out the wind,' it can be completely taken out from under you. But that's just archery. It can go like that."

Nichols wasn't the only athlete with Arizona ties to lose to Urantungalag Tuesday.

Alison Williamson, a graduate of Arizona State, fell to the 35-year-old from Mongolia 7-3 in the first round.

The British national, who won bronze in the 2004 Olympics and who was competing in her sixth Olympics, was disappointed she wasn't able to better represent her home country.

"You want to go out and give them a good show and you want to come back for more," said Williamson, 40. "I'm just kind of disappointed that I've let people down. That's the way it is sometimes."

The first round went Nichols' way, though it took a shootout.

Nichols went first and hit for nine points. India's Chekrovolu Swuro managed just eight, and Nichols got the 6-5 win.
"I just thought, 'OK, one strong shot. That's all I need,'" she said.

Nichols is engaged to be married to this fall, and following her second-round loss she said the London Olympics were likely her last.

"It's a little bit sad that it's already over after working at it this long," she said. "The Olympic Games are an incredible experience. I definitely think there are also other highlights (ahead) in my life."
