Friends to drive Fiesta to Mongolia

Two friends from North Staffordshire are to drive 12,000 miles in a Ford Fiesta from their home town to Mongolia to raise funds for charity.

Childhood pals Adam Klimczak and Mark Hopkins, from Newcastle-under-Lyme, will attempt their challenge in aid of Parkinson's UK.

The friends, both 26, will set off from Newcastle on July 13 and will spend between three and four weeks on the road in their 1.25 Ford Fiesta LX Encore.

Their journey will take them through France, Belgium, Luxembourg, Germany and the Czech Republic, before arriving in the Austrian capital Vienna. From there they will drive to Hungary, Ukraine, Russia and Kazakhstan, before heading back into Russia and onwards to Mongolia.

The duo, who have known each other since the age of four and went to Wolstanton High School together, were inspired to help Parkinson's UK because Adam's dad Andrew Klimczak, 49, has Parkinson's.

Andrew, a former self-employed builder was diagnosed in 2006, and receives care from a specialist Parkinson's nurse. He turns 50 while Adam and Mark are away.

Adam, a sales engineer for Mettex Fasteners in Newcastle, said: "I wanted to take on a real challenge to help raise awareness of Parkinson's as my dad has the condition. I saw a documentary on Mongolia and thought it would be a great idea to re-enact the Mongol Rally to raise funds for Parkinson's UK."

Mark, a design and technology teacher at King's Grove High School, in Crewe, Cheshire, has been fundraising with pupils at his school. He has offered them the chance to have their name on the outside of the car in exchange for a donation.

The rally, set up by The Adventurists, is designed to be an adventure for the participants, and not a traditional rally or race. Participants choose their own route to get to the finish line.

Paul Jackson-Clark, director of fundraising at Parkinson's UK, said: "I'd like to wish Adam and Mark the very best of luck with their adventure. Negotiating the different roads and climate changes will be a real challenge, and I'm sure one they will be relishing."

The friends have funded the trip themselves so all money raised goes to Parkinson's UK. Once the friends have completed their trip they will fly back to the UK. The car will be sold for spare parts with any money raised being used to help disadvantaged families in Mongolia. To sponsor Adam and Mark, visit www.justgiving.com/Mongolian-rally2012
