Clinton Urges Vietnam to Protect Human Rights
U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has stressed the need for Vietnam to protect human rights.
Clinton said Tuesday after meeting with Foreign Minister Pham Binh Minh in Hanoi that she was particularly concerned about the jailing of activists, lawyers and bloggers for peaceful expression.
New York-based Human Rights Watch had urged Clinton to raise the issue with Vietnamese officials, saying restrictions on Internet freedom were a major problem.
Clinton was also scheduled to hold talks with Prime Minister Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung, as well as meet with U.S. and Vietnamese business leaders.
The visit is part of an Asian tour that has already taken her to Japan and Mongolia. She will visit Laos and Cambodia later this week.
