Discovery Perlas fall to China, will battle for third versus Mongolia
The Philippine women's 3-on-3 basketball team Discovery Perlas ng Pilipinas came up a point short on Monday, losing 10-9 against host team China in the semifinal round of the third Asian Beach Games basketball tournament.
The tightly-contested affair saw the Philippines jump out to a 3-0 start, but China came right back to tie it at 3-all, the first of six deadlocks. But the locals held on from that point to advance to the gold medal game, despite having less rebounds (18 to 24) and failing to register a single assist.
Both teams shot under 30 percent from the field, and hit an identical 2-of-3 from the free throw line.
China's four-woman roster boasted of an average age of 16.25 years, in sharp contrast to the Philippine ladies' average age of 25. Still, youthful exuberance trumped veteran savvy in this game, and China will next face India in the finals, a team that had beaten the Philippines 14-9 in the elimination round.
