Biker plans 9,000 mile roadtrip in homage to Jamie

A PERTH man’s memory is to be honoured through a charity motorcycle trek to Mongolia.

Jamie Buyers died in February, at the age of 92. He had suffered cancer and passed away at Cornhill Macmillan Centre in Perth.

Honour

His widow, Elizabeth Buyers (61), was “very touched” when a family friend announced that he wanted to make a 9000-mile road trip in her husband’s honour.

Quintin Stevens plans to ride his motorbike overland to Mongolia in May. He and two friends are setting off on their bikes from his home in Cromarty on May 1.

The charity riders are expected to pass through Perth around 11am on that first day, en route for Newcastle.

They will take the ferry to Amsterdam and continue through Germany, Poland, the Ukraine, Kazakhstan and Siberia. They hope to arrive at Ulaanbaatar, the Mongolian capital, around May 20.

The motorcyclists are raising money for several charities. Marie Curie, the mental health charity Mind and the Renal Unit at Raigmore Hospital in Inverness will all benefit from money raised by the trip.

In his last days, Jamie was looked after by Marie Curie nurses.

“My father also received amazing compassion from Marie Curie nurses before he died,” said Quintin’s wife, Michelle.

“It’s one of the reasons we decided to raise money for the charity.”

Jamie and Elizabeth Buyers enjoyed holidaying in the Cromarty area and over several years, became friends with Quintin and Michelle.

The couple own The Storehouse, a restaurant in Evanton, Easter Ross and Michelle explained the friendship was sparked by a shared love of spaniels.

“Jamie and Elizabeth enjoyed coming to the restaurant, but it was the dogs that really brought us together,” she said.

When Jamie died on February 12 this year, Quintin was sadly unable to attend the funeral.

As an alternative tribute, he set about planning a motorbike trek to one of the most remote destinations in the world.

He’s been involved with bikes all his life and enjoys riding off-road with his close friends Jonathan Coats (28) and Gary Campbell (42), who are making the trip with him.

Elizabeth was lost for words when Quintin explained that he wanted to emblazon Jamie’s name across his motorcycle helmet.

“We were married for 27 very happy years, it’s been hard losing him,” she said.

“I was surprised and delighted that Quintin wanted to put my husband’s name on his helmet, it means he will be very much part of the spirit of the trip.”

Anyone wishing to support the trip can donate through www.virgin-giving.com or cheques can be sent directly to The Storehouse, Foulis Ferry, Evanton, Ross-shire, IV16 9UX, made payable to Trans-mission Mongolia 2012.
