T&T beat Barbados at Worlds
Curtis Humphreys turned around a two-game deficit to outlast Kevin Farley in a five-game thriller, inspiring Trinidad and Tobago to a 3-0 blanking of Barbados and a men's Fifth Division semi-final berth, at the World Team Table Tennis Championships, in Dortmund, Germany, yesterday.
Dexter St Louis sent T&T ahead with an 11-6, 11-5, 11-7 dismissal of Mark Dowell.
Farley then won the first two games in his showdown with Humphreys. But the University of Trinidad and Tobago (UTT) student battled back to win the marathon duel 7-11, 6-11, 14-12, 12-10, 12-10.
Terell Abbott completed victory for T&T with an 11-8, 12-10, 11-6 defeat of Aaron Barker.
In today's Fifth Division semis, T&T tackle Sri Lanka and Jamaica take on Mongolia.
In the round of 16 clash with Turkmenistan, yesterday, St Louis won twice to lead T&T to a 3-2 victory.
The France-based player defeated Yagshimyrat Annamyradov 11-2, 11-6, 13-11, and Rashid Ahmedov at 5, 7 and 6.
Humphreys got the other win for T&T, beating Annamyradov 16-14, 9-11, 11-5, 11-4.
Earlier, Ahmedov got the better of Humphreys 11-9, 10-12, 11-9, 9-11, 11-8, and Andrey Antonov stopped Abbott 11-6, 11-5, 9-11, 14-12.
On Wednesday, T&T had beaten Liberia by default to finish second in Group S, behind Mongolia.
In the women's Fourth Division quarter-finals, today, T&T face Tajikistan. The T&T women topped Group O with four wins in as many matches.
