Teachers announce strike
About 300 disgruntled teachers were hoping to meet with Finance Minister S.Bayartsogt, Social Welfare and Labor Minister T.Gandi, and Education, Culture and Science Minister Yo.Otgonbayar on Thursday, but the ministers never showed up.
In September, the government and unions agreed to increase teachers’ salaries by MNT 80,000 beginning March 1, 2012, and by 23 percent beginning May 1, 2012. But the teachers say they want raises beginning January 1.
J.Batzorig, the head of Trade Unions of Education and Science, says the teachers have now formed a strike committee “The Government has not fulfilled its promise,” he added. More than 10,000 teachers are pledging to strike next week, and they are threatening to stay on strike until their demands are met.
